It is difficult to distinguish whether axes were used as weapons or as tools. Most likely they served both purposes. The axes are classified according to their design into clearly classifiable types. Here we can name from the oldest period axes in the shape of a chisel followed by axes with a lobed step or axes with a straight lath step. In later times of the urnfield culture, axes with central lobes appear. In the peak phase of the Bronze Age, we find classic axes with occipital lobes and also axes with tulle.
A special category are hatchets, these appear mainly in the Early Bronze Age. Due to their shape, it is possible that they were a certain symbol of the power of their holder.
