Třicetiletá válka (1618–1648) byla rozsáhlý konflikt v Evropě, který začal jako náboženský spor mezi katolíky a protestanty ve Svaté říši římské. Brzy však přerostla v politický boj o moc mezi evropskými dynastiemi a státy, včetně Francie, Švédska, Dánska a Španělska.

Hlavní fáze války

  1. Česká válka (1618–1620): Válka začala pražskou defenestrací, kdy čeští protestanté vyhodili císařské místodržící z okna. Následovala bitva na Bílé hoře, kde byli Češi poraženi.

  2. Dánská válka (1625–1629): Dánský král Kristián IV. zasáhl ve prospěch protestantů, ale byl poražen císařskými vojsky Albrechta z Valdštejna.

  3. Švédská válka (1630–1635): Švédský král Gustav II. Adolf se postavil na stranu protestantů a dobyl mnoho území, než byl v roce 1632 zabit.

  4. Francouzsko-švédská válka (1635–1648): Francie, ač katolická, vstoupila do války proti Habsburkům. Tato fáze byla nejkrvavější a způsobila masivní devastaci Evropy.

Konec války

Válka skončila v roce 1648 Vestfálským mírem, který ustanovil nové politické uspořádání v Evropě a přinesl náboženskou toleranci. Válka zanechala obrovské ztráty na životech, vyhladovělé obyvatelstvo a ekonomicky oslabené evropské státy, především Svatou říši římskou.
