The metal detectorists of the West Riding Detector Group felt like they had hit the jackpot eleven years ago. For near Knaresborough in North Yorkshire they found 178 silver coins dating back to the twelfth century.

A ceramic vessel with 1,341 silver denarii from the time of the rulers Břetislav I and Spytihnev II was discovered four years ago by a woman in the woods near the village of Řeteč near the border of the South Bohemia and Central Bohemia regions. The coins were about ten centimetres underground.

In 2014, amateur historian and detectorist Jim Bailey discovered a set of ancient Arabic coins in an orchard on the American island of Rhode Island. Since then, 15 more of these coins have been found in the US. Investigations have shown that they all came from the loot of Captain Avery, once the world's most wanted criminal of the late 17th century. The finds and Bailey's theories helped shed light on how and where the murderous pirate disappeared.
