Square AB

I still consider myself a rookie in the search business. I enjoy every good find and as it happens the stupidest farmer always has the biggest potatoes. This is especially true of my square AB buttons. I find the silverplate far more often than the coveted square button. In fact, there's no telling where it might be. You might find it near a higher elevation village, in the middle of a forest or in a large meadow. But all my finds had one thing in common. They were always found in the higher elevations of the Sumava forests. The finds are so random that I literally sit on my ass for every one of them. The last knofllajs was in the middle of the forest, where I would not have expected it at all. Perhaps the only clue might have been an old German village nearby but it's certainly no guarantee of a great knob. I'd estimate their age to be around 1800.

Twice I've found kreuzers with that date near these buttons. As my occasional partner told me, buttons were used to fasten heavy coats. The largest piece is less than 5cm, and that's enough for a regular button. Its body is massive and heavy. The only weakness is the eyelet. Only two of the buttons have retained their eyelets. The ornamentation of the buttons is identical. I've seen other finds with similar ornamentation. The frequency of finds is really low. Once every six months I get extremely lucky and a button peeks out of the ground at me. But I've never found two buttons in the same place. These buttons are a regional affair and are said to have been imported all the way from France. The back of the button shows noticeable hand working and eyelet soldering. I know of a few seekers who also have a few pieces. But no one wants to trade them in when a knob is this rare. I know, it's still just an ordinary button, but even a gold ring doesn't make me as happy as a shiny square. Well, I'm a button man.
