Realistic coil range Detech Ultimate for Nokta Simplex+ metal detectors

Some time ago, Nokta provided its technology to Detech for the development of the Ultimate coils. These need no extensive introduction, they have been with us for a number of years and in most cases represent the very top end of what you can buy as an accessory.

We took a very responsible approach to range testing and attempted to simulate a number of setups as well as several types of ground conditions (Field, Beach and Forest). However, we always used a sensitivity setting of 4, so as to avoid as much ringing and ghosting as possible. The resulting range is thus not maximum, but it is realistic. So you should repeat it every time you test.

Range at 1kcs

The basic simplex coil got an average range of 25-26 cm for this target. Ultimate 13" 29-30cm and 15" 30-31cm. The difference might seem quite small to some, but it is not. A coin like 1k is a relatively small target so the increase in probe size doesn't show up as much. But it is a certain 15% and that is a lot in the world of detectors.

The range for small ag

Simplex with the basic coil was 17-18 cm Again, I remind you that the sensitivity setting was at 4 and this is the average of all the programs tested in a really quiet setting. The Ultimate 13 got to 21-22 cm and the Ultimate 15" got the same result of 21-22 cm. This shows that for such a tiny target, the difference between the Ultimates was zero. So again, the owner of an Ultimatka can look forward to about a 15% range bonus.

About the tested locations: The targets were always buried in places without any iron. Since these were fresh dugouts, this will help the detector's range a bit. So even though Simplex does not respond directly to empty holes in the 4-5 sensitivity setting (when the ground is tuned correctly). The purpose was not to show the maximum range of the detector, but the difference in range between the larger Ultimate probes and the Simplex base coil.

Rating

We still see that prospectors find a similar range difference on coins of around 10 and 15% to be not enough, but this is reality. Moreover, it should be pointed out here that the Simplex is a beginner's detector. With many simple VLF detectors, a larger probe will add range for small targets, but the targets are already reporting "iron" at depth.

The development of the coils has certainly benefited from Detech making a deal directly with Nokta to produce them, eliminating the problem of the possibility that the coil would stop working after some detector upgrade.

As always, buying a probe is worth considering. Since the probes contain electronics they are more expensive than conventional ultimates for detectors that have all the electronics in the box. Thus, is it worth buying a probe for 5000 kc? Wouldn't it be better to add the money to a higher-end detector?

As with everything, your time is worth the most. If you have a number of hours with the Simplex, you will have already "listened" to the detector. By that I don't mean that you know its settings, but that you can already perceive problematic targets and can avoid unwanted targets, etc. It takes some practice to master the instrument. And no one is going to give you that time.
