Husband and wife find a treasure; they get 1.3 million crowns as a reward

A young couple from the Slovak Liptov region found the cup with silver and gold coins from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries in the soil near the village of Likavka, which was disturbed by wild pigs at the beginning of last year. The Slovak RTVS station reported this week on the experts' findings and the amount of the reward.
The treasure consists of 1,867 silver coins - denarii, one groschen and two gold ducats; together they weigh more than two kilograms. The set includes coins of Vladislav II. Jagiellonian, Ludwig II. Jagiellonian and Jan Zápolský. The youngest coin dates from 1527, a period when the local nobilityimperial intervention against the then owner of Likava Castle, Ján Zápolský.
"It is 99% related to the burning of the castle and probably some follower of Ján Zápolský hid the treasure in haste and fear for his life," explained Martin Furman from the Regional Heritage Office in Žilina. The fact that the treasure was probably deposited in a hurry is evidenced by its depth - it was only a few centimetres below the surface.
The moment the couple made the discovery, they immediately contacted the Heritage Office and the police without any prior disturbance. This allowed archaeologists to document the find in situ - in its original location - and to trace all the parts of the broken mug. Moreover, the coins were protected in the pot by a surprisingly well-preserved fabric. Because the couple complied with all the conditions of the Slovak Monuments Act, they achievedthey reached 100% of the cultural and historical value of the find, which the expert estimated at more than 50,000 euros, i.e. about CZK 1,330,000.
According to the head of the Department of Archaeology of the Slovak Republic's Heritage Office, Peter Bisták, the reward is set at a higher amount than the dishonest finder would have received by selling on the black market: "The social value of the find is determined, so if some stock market prices or numismatic value is taken, it may be significantly lower than the social value." Thus, if the finder tried to monetise the treasure himself, not only would he get a much lower amount than what the expert determined, but he would also, of course, be breaking the law.
According to Peter Bisták, the conditions for gaining the reward in the form of one hundred percent of the treasure's value are, first of all, to keep calm, to leave the treasure in its original form and not to collect it. Ideally, contact experts immediately and secure the site from disturbance or theft. This case is a model of how a finder should behave if he wants to claim the reward.
The treasure has become part of the collection of the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok. According to experts, the number of accidentally found and reported treasures is increasing. Last year alone, there were ten.

hen to že vraj fakt našli laici tesne pri turistickom chodniku kde sa premele kopec ludi. Riešili to traja lokalny archaci s ktorých je jeden aj súdny znalec archeo... tak nieco na tom mozno pravdy bude ... ale tie prasata že by akorat rozryli depútek to je divné aj mne

Na druhou stranu kdyby uzakonili odmeny, pribylo by spoustu novych hledacu, kteri by to delali je pro to. To by znamenapo spustu nezahrabanych děr,bordelu, nasraných zemědelců a spatny pohled na vsechny hledace.
