How to use a metal detector Fisher F22

Categories: Detektor kovů Fisher F44 a F22

Fisher The F22 is currently sold in two versions. The basic one with a "droplet" concentric coil and an improved version that uses the 2D probe you know from the F75. The only difference is the range, which is higher with the 2D probe, so there is a slight increase in resistance in heavily mineralized soils, which is again related to the 2D coil.

Even though this is a beginner detector, it can already surprise in many ways and there are also tweaks that are certainly not common for this price class.

Basic settings

As with most detectors, the basic settings are a combination of sensitivity, discrimination and operating mode.

Sensitivity - Sensitivity settings range from 0 to 10. The higher the setting, the greater the range of the detector. However, higher settings result in lower stability, so the sensitivity setting is always some compromise between range and stability. A tried and tested method of setting is to start at the recommended value of 6, walk the detector a few steps, and when the instrument is steady raise it again to 7 and repeat the process. Interference is a little different at each location and it is a shame to rob yourself of depth with any fixed value.

Volume - The volume setting has a scale from 0 to 20. When up to number 10 you set the overall volume for both iron and non-ferrous metals, and from 10 to 20 you set the iron volume. (The volume of non-ferrous targets does not change, the volume of ferrous targets gradually increases). This allows you to adapt to a location full of iron without having to filter the iron, which always costs some range.

Discrimination - The detector uses cutout discrimination. It all works very simply. You select a notch in the menu and then use plus and minus to arrive at the digit you want to discriminate. It will flash and then disappear. If the number is not visible, you are discriminating metals of that conductivity. Personally, I think that in our Central European conditions the best choice is but to go in All Metal - in all metals. In addition, if the detector offers the possibility to turn down the volume of the iron, as the F22 can, it should be the obvious first choice.

Working modes - the detector uses 4 working modes with different settings especially discrimination.

Jewelry : the mode suppresses all iron targets automatically.
Coin - Coins: the mode suppresses both iron and segments number 2 and 4
Artifact - Antiques: in this mode the detector does not discriminate any group of targets
Custom - Individual: Custom settings for both discrimination and audio

Of the preset modes, from my point of view, Jewelry and Antiques are decently usable in our conditions. In Jewelry mode, you have the iron closed and all colored targets are audible. Many searchers prefer this setting. Antiques is basically like an All Metal mode with no other settings. I would probably avoid the "coin" setting for the most part. Since segments 2 and 4 are automatically suppressed here, and that's a sign that small silver or gold is easy to cross.

The most interesting mode, however, is Custom - we'll cover it in the next paragraph.

Custom - individual settings

In the individual settings you can set discrimination for any group of targets (as I described in the paragraph that dealt with discrimination above). But the main bonus is in the audio response settings, which offer unprecedented possibilities at this price. In fact, you can set the 4 tones pretty much anywhere you want, as well as the VCO (variable intensity tone)

When selecting tones, it proceeds as follows:

  1. Press the MODE button until the CUSTOM search program is activated.
  2. Press and hold the MODE button again (for more than 1 second) until the first category Fe starts flashing on the upper discriminating numeric scale
  3. Use the MENU button to scroll through the category scale
  4. Now use + or - to select each category (Fe, 2 - 9) one of 5 tones (0 = VCO, 1 = bass, 2 = low, 3 = medium, 4 = high)
  5. To exit the menu, press the MODE button
  6. To continue selecting tones for other categories, press MENU again and select the next category. To exit the setting selection, press MODE

With this option, you can easily make F22 into a little F75 in the 2F setting. When you set the tone to 1 for the irons and assign VCO to all the other numbers.
