Facts and myths about Hitler's health
Categories: Wars , Second World War
There are a huge number of theories about what really happened to Hitler's health. Some say he was addicted to drugs, others label him a victim of hypnosis. In Germany, however, a book was published last year which claims that drugs and disease had almost no
Adolf Hitler hada fatherly relationship with his personal physician, Theodor Morell. "My dear doctor, I am so looking forward to meeting you in the morning," reads a note from Hitler. He was convinced that Theodor Morell had saved his life on several occasions. "My dear Doctor, if we both survive the war, a great reward awaits you", Hitler's correspondence reads.
Traudl Junge, who acted as Hitler's secretary during the war, later said that the Führer was totally dependent on Morell. Ironically, however, the doctor did not have a very flattering reputation. When Eva Braun, Hitler's longtime companion, complained about Morell's neglect of his personal hygiene, Hitler defended him, declaring, "Morell is not here to smell, but he is here to treat me!"Among Nazi notables, his medical skills were commonly questioned. General Heinz Guderian referred to him as a fat charlatan, and Hermann Göring coined a new nickname for him: the master of the Reich syringe. There were also rumours that Morell had turned Hitler into a filthy drug addict.
There are many theories
A huge amount of speculation arose immediately after the war. It was even claimed that Hitler was gay and schizophrenic. To make matters worse, a group of scientists began to explain his creepy behavior as the result of botched hypnosis. The information concerning Hitler's genitals is also very juicy. It was said that he had a small penis, one testicle and syphilis. In effect, Hitler was a drug addict with a personal physician as his dealer.
All these theories are very dangerous. If they were really true, they would mean that Hitler was mentally ill, and this could partially exonerate him for all his horrible actions. Perhaps fortunately, all medical records concerning Hitler have been lost. Indeed, Holocaust denier David Irving and his ilk could use the material to their advantage and adapt history to their own image. Thus, researchers have only Morell's notes and witness statements.
Last year, however, a new book, "Was Hitler Sick?", was published in Germany. The historian Henrik Eberle and the medical professor Hans-Joachim Neumann, using modern medical analysis, found new facts and decided to publish them in this book. All in all, these are quite shocking things that are hard to believe. For example, the book says that Hitler had dental fillings made of gold that belonged to Jews. In addition, the authors have compiled a list of 82 medications that, according to historical documents, the leader was supposed to have taken. This means that Morell was willing to comply with his every wish in relation to medication. Hitler was regularly given a solution of glucose and vitamins to help him fight fatigue. If possible, he had all his medication administered intravenously, as he was skeptical of pills and tablets.
From 1944, when Hitler was seeing Eva Braun, Morell is also said to have injected him with testosterone injections that also had extracts from the testicles of bulls in them. The doctor's notes further show that the man who considered himself the greatest leader of all time suffered from daily feelings of fear and was constantly ill. His greatest bugbear was a panicky fear of cancer. Even his famous speeches, at which he screamed at the top of his lungs, did not add to his health. He grew increasingly hoarse and doctors had to remove polyps from his throat twice. In addition, he had high blood pressure, chronic gastrointestinal cramps and was also quite delicate. Once when he contracted a cold from his barber, he was as angry as a little child.
Hitler and vegetarianism
That Hitler was a vegetarian is a matter of public record. His digestive problems led him to do so. However, Nazi propaganda exploited this fact and made their leader an animal lover. However, the opposite was true. Hitler had to restrain his eating. He even took huge amounts of anti-bloating drugs, which, of course, contained one of the substances found in rat poison. So there was speculation that Hitler had been poisoned. In addition, he began to show symptoms of jaundice in 1944, and this caused a rift between Morell and other doctors who were eager to take his place. Eberle and Neumann therefore embarked on research to discover whether Hitler had indeed been poisoned. However, by analysing the composition of the drugs and their dosage, they were able to deny this fact absolutely. Morell was therefore probably correct in diagnosing Hitler with hepatitis, which had an adverse effect on his gall bladder.
Meth addiction
Hitler's behaviour also gave rise to speculation that he was addicted to methamphetamine. Why not, when it was known that several members of the Nazi elite were drug addicts. Pervitin was even added to soldiers' chocolate. There is also an entry in Morell's notebooks where he mentions how he actually gave Hitler the drug once, but there is no actual proof that he was addicted to the substance. The Führer's tantrums may even have been caused by meningitis, which he contracted from a goat that bit him on the testicle when he was young. However, this, too, has never been confirmed. Nor was the claim that his behaviour changed in 1918 when he could not be awakened after hypnosis, which he underwent after being blinded in a gas attack on a battlefield during World War I.
However,
Eberle and Neumann, who tried to test all these theories, came to a very different conclusion. In their book they state that Hitler suffered from Parkinson's disease, but was fully aware of all his actions. Towards the end of the war, his health problems increased, which is said to be one of the reasons he committed suicide.
