Eight-year-old girl discovers a very rare Stone Age dagger in the schoolyard

Little Elise was playing outside the school when she discovered a 3,700-year-old flint dagger from the Neolithic period. The discovery immediately attracted a lot of attention; it is a very rare find in Norway, as flint does not occur naturally here.

The beautifully preserved flint tool was lying behind a stone in the yard of a school in Vestland county. It was so beautiful," Elise said in a statement to the media. She then showed it to teacher Karen Drange, who recognized an archaeological artifact in the "stone" and subsequently alerted the Vestland District Council along with local archaeologists.

The almost 12 centimetres long tool is a very rare find in Norway. According to county archaeologist Louis Bjerre Petersen, flint is not naturally occurring in Norway, so the dagger probably originates from the North Sea region of Denmark. According to archaeologists, this type of dagger is often found in sacrificial finds. Vestland County Council has teamed up with the University Museum in Bergen to further research the site. But no further evidence of the Stone Age has been found.

According to the design and style, the dagger is Neolithic. In Norway, the Stone Age lasted from 10 000 BC to 1 800 BC, with a number of hunters and gatherers only beginning to settle and farm permanently around 2 400 BC. The dagger will now be catalogued and used in research at the University Museum of Bergen.

Recently, another Stone Age discovery has attracted attention in Norway: last winter, a full-body reconstruction of a teenage boy who lived there 8 300 years ago was exhibited at the Hå Gamle Prestegard museum in southern Norway. The boy was probably part of a group of hunters and gatherers, but the details of his death are a mystery; he seems to have died alone leaning against the cave wall, as his remains bore no signs of burial.
