Dictator's watch sold for 26.5 million
Categories: Second World War
The object, which gives you "chills", was offered by the American auction house Alexander Historical Auctions. It is a gold watch of Adolf Hitler. It sold for 1.1 million dollars (26.5 million crowns). In the past, the auction house has, for example, auctioned the dictator's toilet seat. The auction outraged the Jews.
The president of the European Jewish Association and Rabbi Menachem Margolin said it was water for those individuals who idealise the Nazis. "There are lessons to be learned from history, and legitimate Nazi artifacts belong in museums and similar institutions, but items like those in the auction do not," Margolin said.
The auction house told German media that their aim was to preserve history. Most of the items sold, they said, will end up in private collections. Some owners will also donate them to Holocaust museums. "Even if the history is bad, it must be preserved. If you destroy history, there's no proof that it happened," said Mindy Greenstein, vice president of Alexander Historical Auctions.
Adolf Hitler led Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945, orchestrating the systematic murder of up to 11 million people. He likely received the watch for his birthday in 1933. The year he became chancellor of Germany. According to Alexander Historical Auctions, the watch was captured by French soldiers when they invaded Berghof, Hitler's mountain retreat, in May 1945.
The watch is engraved with the initials AH and depicts a swastika. The watch was made by Andreas Huber of Munich, Germany. Three dates are also engraved on the watch - Hitler's birthday, the day he became Chancellor of Germany and the date his party won the election. According to auction house documents, there is no proof that Hitler actually wore the watch. An independent expert at least concluded that the watch did indeed belong to Hitler. The auction house estimated it could sell for up to $4 million. In the end, it went for $1.1 million.
Also up for auction were a dress that belonged to Hitler's wife Eva Braun, documents signed by Nazi officials and a cloth Star of David with "Jude" printed on it. The golden eagle from Hitler's bedroom fetched over $240,000.
An American auction house had already offered the dictator's toilet seat for sale last year. The estimate was $15,000, or 320,000 crowns. In the end, it sold for less than $14,000.
