A properly bathed test of the Mars MD Gauss detector

When I finally got there, of course more than a week later (mail or mischievous predecessors...), it was probably the worst four days of the month. As the classic would say, "piss and piss".. The classic, however, did not anticipate other super-experiences, such as that I would forget my boots and boots somewhere and that the bomber was not as waterproof as I would have expected after all these years.

I won't forget those few searches in sneakers, anyway I went to Jilemnice to get Gauss and started preparations for the search. On the advice of a friend I installed the Aladin app (they say it's great for rain). So yeah... I set off at 8am with Aladin showing that it will rain at about 1pm and the wipers in the car are currently saying "don't spill out of the car". I'm not made of sugar, I'll give you that... I'm going to a location where I can still get a few things out. The ONE SOIL app is reporting lots of brown fields in the area, so hopefully that will work. I'm coming up behind Brandýs or Stara Boleslav, I still don't know which bank is whose :), and my windshield wiper is running at top speed so yay.

Nothing will come of my original intention to make a video of the real search, because the drizzle is so intense that the camera doesn't give it. I'm still on my phone for a while looking to see if the Gauss is waterproof , which without reading glasses at that point doesn't matter, of course it doesn'tI don't even have a snack bag to cover the unit, so I figure by the workmanship of the box, foil and buttons it will be OK. The snag came immediately afterwards. The tester in front of me had tightened the rod lock so much that I was unable to loosen it despite my best efforts. Ever since I've been driving a car that I'm not even able to fix anything on besides changing the wheel, I don't even carry tools. Slightly annoyed, I leave for a nearby gas station asking if they have any sikes to borrow.

Heureka, helpfully brings them and asks what kind of detector she is also looking for and doesn't know this one and why the calipers? Comes a great moment with lots of praise for whoever tightened it and also macho talk about what a novelty it is. Problem solved, I return to the field kicked up with adrenaline. I turn on the baby, tune up the ground, everything's all set, how else can I do it without the goggles that are on the table at home :) Anyway, I set GAIN to 35 because I know that full is not the right thing to do with most detectors, DISC to 0 when I'm already vaguely out of translating I remember that it breaks the sound of deep and high tone, FREQ to some H, if so I am of course first interested in the 48 Khz, SEARCH to Hi and MODE to An .

I searched with this setting for about 4 hours, then the headphones were soaked with water and started to have that strange hollow sound, and my fingers got blue and totally soaked. Anyway, searching on this setting I found it a bit wild and wonky at first, but after a while it was quite readable. Where there was a colour signal but lots of iron sound around, it was always a big iron of some patchwork. I dug out a pocketful of colors, including about 10 coins, two Ag, a sacrament, a dog flint and some of that lead.

At home, I had everything dried and loaded. I have to single out the magnetic connector on the unit here, it snaps on perfectly. I called my friends the other day looking and read a few things from the manual about SEARCH and MODE.

In the morning Aladdin is again grinding out his guaranteed predictions and of course it's pouring rain outside. However, two buddies relented and we headed out to one originally milky meadow quite insanely infested with iron. After a quarter of an hour of sneering at my trainers we go looking and, equipped with goggles this time, I go and variously reposition the Gaussik. This time I also try the lower frequency of 16KHz, which is noticeably quieter and more worthy. I also try going in alternating CL and cL modes. Finally I end up with the 48KHz Hi and An MODE frequencies, which I probably enjoy the most. Admittedly wailed on so much iron, but the analog response gives the most information in my opinion. For such an iron infested environment I would definitely welcome a smaller probe for separation, the TIGER is still too big and gets overwhelmed. After three hours a really heavy and cold rain drove us home. I'm glad... I've had enough. The next morning looking out the window, I declare a strike and with the excuse that things like headphones and detector need to dry for the next tester, I'm not going anywhere.

So here's my review of the detector:

The design is solid and balanced, well made. Nothing sticks out anywhere, the lock holds (too much - even I hand tightened it enough that it wouldn't come loose), the slide-in unit holds well and only longer time will tell if it's any different.

Setup is simple, intuitive and you just have to learn what each item in the small menu means. I think any searcher can find a combination in the settings that works for them. Unfortunately, in such a short time and inclement weather, I was unable to test the differences in manual and automatic ground and their various combinations with frequency and search modes and evaluation modes.

With the 16KHz SEARCH no and MODE CL and cL settings, the detector is worthy, quite quiet and certainly suitable for some newcomer. In an iron infested environment I found Search better set to Hi .

MODE is a strange one as something different will suit everyone I'm sure. Personally, An appealed to me but the quieter CL and cL with better numerical evaluation will certainly have plenty of fans. It will all depend on the soil type of course. The

48KHz setting is a bit in a different league, certainly better for small targets but also much more "lively" in iron and wants to play around with other modes. For an experienced searcher with good hearing, feel free to use An evaluation.

Wireless transmission

The transmission is very fast with instant response, we already know this from the MD link wireless set. Plugging in the box, switching channels and pairing is very easy and should be handled by anyone. The headphones are , probably not quite up to the heat , but in the cold and marast I was glad for them. You can, of course, plug any of your favorite headphones into the box.

Conclusion

Personally, the detector appealed to me and after a few hours we even got along well enough that I didn't kick any unwanted iron. The only minor minus I can see is that it tastes like coke, but that is not uncommon at this frequency.
For me, this is a very big favorite in its price range. The option of two frequencies, 16KHz as All terrain and high 48KHz for small targets, is an excellent combination. I'd be happy to revisit the detector and possibly shoot some video of a real search with different combinations of SEARCH and MODE.
