A fortnight ago, the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Gorzów Wielkopolski received notification of the discovery of a Bronze Age treasure. The collection included axes, bracelets, sickles and other bronze objects discovered by detectorists from the Drossen Lubuskie association with a search permit from the Lubuskie Heritage Office.
The depot of bronze objects consists of three sickles, two axes, four bracelets (three of which were decorated with engravings), six rings, two fragments of wire and one fragment of a bronze pin. The artefacts also included pieces of foundry waste. The hoard was partially ploughed and the objects were discovered scattered. They will be taken to the museum for conservation in the near future.
The heterogeneous nature of the discovered objects (ornaments, weapons, household items) and foundry waste indicates a deliberate deposit with the intention of retrieving the depot at a later date. A previous similar find from the vicinity of Gubin is associated with the Lusatian ash-field culture and is tentatively dated between 1000 and 800 BC). Several similar assemblages have already been discovered in Lubuskie. In this period, times were turbulent and bronze was worth gold, foundrymen often hid their sources and products.
The discovery site has been added to the list of sites forbidden to detectorists and additional archaeological verification research is planned for the future. The site will be added to the provincial list of monuments. "In Poland, according to the Act on the Protection and Care of Monuments of 23 July 2003, a permit is required for searching," explained Norbert Burzyński from the WUOZ branch in Gorzów Wielkopolski. "Here it is worth mentioning the exemplary approach of the members of the Drossen Lubuskie Association, who, in accordance with the conditionsnitions of the permit, they immediately reported the discovery of the items to the conservation service and secured them until they were taken over," added Mr Burzyński.
