5.5.1950 Hrozov treasure

The treasure was found 73 years ago on the banks of the Hrozovský brook. They were bronze coins. Interestingly, they came from the region of Carthage. The oldest coin from the depot dates back to around 200 BC.

The coins were found during a geological survey in May 1950. "They were found in the surface layer on the left bank of the stream in front of the Hroznova raft. They were found by Fr. Brenner found 4 bronze coins, which were sent to the National Museum for determination. No original material was found," said MUDr. Jaromír Kalus.

The individual coins come from different periods such as Byzantine or Greek. The youngest coins are from the seventh century AD. One of the four coins remained unknown to archaeologists.

The first coin is not in good condition. Origin Zeugitania, Carthage (c. 241-136 BC), Appearance: obverse: head of Persephone on left with wreath of ears, reverse: head of horse on right, dot in right field

Second coin. Origin Byzantium, Justin II (565-57). Appearance: obverse: (DN(IVSTI NVSP /PA/ bust of the emperor standing upright in helmet and armour, reverse: VTI-S NI 10 numm

Third coin. Appearance: obverse:/ DNERAC/ LIOPPAV Bust of the Emperor standing erect in military cloak and crown on his head, holding a globe with a cross in his right hand, reverse: X.X / - 20 numm / above the numbers is a cross, to the left a star, to the right a diameter of 5, below the line KRTG

Apart from the coins, Hrozová boasts another rarity. The oldest frescoes in the Moravian-Silesian region can be found in the local church. They date back to the thirteenth century and were covered only ten years ago. Such a rare monument was not expected by conservationists. It was a great sensation at the time.

The frescoes are distinguished by large figures. Several painters were involved. The frescoes blend the Romanesque tradition. The figures depict St. Michael or the enthroned Christ. The paintings were probably commissioned by a high-ranking member of the Lords of Fulstein.

Hrozová is one of the smallest villages in the Czech Republic. According to data from 2021, it had 26 inhabitants. The first written mention dates back to 1309. Until 1566, Hrozová belonged to the Fulštejn estate. The biggest landmark of the village is the aforementioned church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. Its core is a Gothic building from the thirteenth century.
