3.12.2019 Mushroom picker discovers 4000-year-old sickle

The preserved sickle from the Bronze Age was discovered two years ago by a mushroom picker who was in the forest near Hesov. It was a stranger who reported the find. He went mushroom picking while on holiday in Přibyslav.

In the area where the man went mushroom picking, bark beetle wood was being harvested. There were pieces of the hillside torn out.

According to archaeologist Aleš Knápek, such finds are rare in the Highlands. Objects from the Bronze Age are quite rare in Vysočina and this sickle is practically undamaged," Knápek said.

It was the only such artefact in the region that was acquired by a local museum. The newly found sickle went to the Brod museum. "As far as I know, none of the local museums in the Highlands has such a find. We only have a few bronze axes," he revealed.

The Mining Museum in Příbram has a similar sickle in its collections. It was discovered by Viktorin Knittel before the Second World War near the Na Pelech grove. He also discovered other objects of similar age. His father was a forester who also saved several objects from the medieval to modern period in the vicinity of the grove.

Such artefacts are rare for any museum. The Brod Museum was also delighted with the treasure from Nová Ves near Chotěbor, which they had acquired a few months before the aforementioned sickle. During the reconstruction of the family house, the couple discovered 776 silver coins from the period between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.

The couple received a reward of almost 35,000 crowns. "This is the largest depot we have in our museum and it is also very important because we did not have coins from this period represented in such a large number. We can demonstrate the development of our currency on them. But there is nothing unique among them," said historian Michal Kamp.
