Two bottles of whiskey from the wreck of the SS Politician were available for at least 9,000 pounds eight years ago. She sank during World War II off Eriskay Island. Most of the crates of alcohol were discovered by locals.
The bottles formed only part of the SS Politician's cargo. It was a cargo ship that ran aground off the coast of the Hebridean island of Eriskay in 1941. Bad weather played a role. Its load consisted of crates of malt whiskey and Jamaican banknotes worth three million pounds.
When the ship sank, hundreds of crates of whiskey were seized by the people of Eriskay Island and some were buried in the ground. They were afraid that they would be captured by the customs officers, so they decided to hide their alcohol. However, some bottles remained under water and were gradually washed away by the sea. Part was won by a diving expedition in 1997. And in 2013, the Scotch Whiskey Auctions auction house from Glasgow offered two bottles in an online electronic auction.
There was even a film about the shipwreck and the locals trying to save the bottles of whiskey called Whiskey Galore! The British film comedy was made in 1949. The minimum price for a pair of bottles was £ 9,000. At the same time, it was not at all expected that she could still be drunk. But the story of individual bottles can be interesting for collectors.
"Everyone loves the story of cunning islanders sinking to the bottom of a shipwreck and coming back with bottles of whiskey, which they then hide from customs. Some bottles have previously been sold at Christie's, "says Bill Mackintosh, who led the later auction. "Bottles are incredibly rare and provide a unique opportunity to get a real piece of Scottish history," Mackintosh was attracted at the time. He believed that the auction would attract collectors from all over the world.
Christie's sold eight bottles, which he found in a 1987 wreck during a Donald MacPhee dive. He acquired a stake of four thousand pounds. Two of these bottles were bought by a man in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.
At the time of the ship sailing from Liverpool to the Jamaican capital Kingston and New Orleans in the USA, a total of 28,000 bottles of malt whiskey were on board. The islanders saved most of the cargo. A pair of bottles was finally auctioned in 2013 for more than 12,000 pounds.
