A prospector with a metal detector found a gold Roman ring in a garden in the village of Tangley, Hampshire, England. It's engraved with the completely naked god of love, Eros.
Archaeologists say it's an extraordinary find, so they were pleased that the prospector turned in the jewel. The ring was made of gold and two stones, one of which is a dark onyx. It could have been owned by a man or woman who lived during the Roman Empire. The ring bears the god Eros with visibly short wings. Experts have estimated the age of the ring at 1,700 years.
Eros is depicted leaning against a spiral column, his legs crossed and holding a torch in one hand. The ring, which was discovered near the village of Tangley, went to a museum in Hampshire and was subsequently displayed by Andover Museum.
The depiction of gods was very popular among the Greeks and Romans. This particular design is characteristic of the fourth century AD. The first references to Eros date back to the second century AD. He is described as a cunning seducer, wielding a torch, quiver, bow and arrows.
He was usually naked, and any woman struck by his arrow fell deeply in love with him. One legend, for example, tells of Princess Psyche, who was very beautiful. Aphrodite was jealous of her, so she summoned Eros, only to have the arrow bring her not love and happiness, but unhappiness and worry. Eros obeyed and flew after Psyche. But when he saw her, he immediately fell in love with her and for the first time disobeyed his mother.
A ring of 24-carat gold
A prospector with a metal detector was also very lucky to find a Roman ring made of twenty-four carat gold. He discovered it in a field near Crewkerne, England. The jewel bears an engraving of the Roman god of victory riding a chariot drawn by two horses. It weighs 48 grams and dates from sometime between 200 and 300.
The historian discovered the ring along with several Roman coins, and at first thought that the ring was actually a coin as well. We also wrote about the ring here:
