22.8. 1471 Vladislav Jagellonsky crowned King of Bohemia

Categories: Personalities , Calendar

Vladislav Jagiellonian had to continue the war with Matthias Corvinus right from the beginning of his reign. When he became King of Hungary, he moved from Prague to Buda. He died at the age of sixty.

Vladislav was accepted by the representatives of the Bohemian Estates as the successor of George of Poděbrady in 1469. They thus complied with the wishes of George of Poděbrady, who believed that a ruler with blue blood would have a stronger position than a "civilian". In addition, Vladislav's father, King Casimir IV of Poland, promised to advocate to the Pope for the recognition of the compact. In addition, the promise of this candidate to pay the debts left by George of Poděbrady carried considerable weight with the representatives of the Estates.

"In addition, on 16 January 1471, he promised not to promise the crown jewels, the provincial plates or Karlstejn to anyone with whom the appointed representatives of the Bohemians disagreed. He was thus reacting to the action of George of Poděbrady, who in 1462 had given custody of the castle and the valuables it contained to his son Viktorín," writes Stanislava Jarolímková in her book What is not in the textbooks.

Vladislav Jagiellon was crowned King of Bohemia in August 1471, from 1490 he was Margrave of Moravia and King of Hungary also as Vladislav II. He inherited a really complicated political situation. From the very beginning of his reign, Vladislav Jagiellonian had to continue the war with Matthias Corvinus. However, neither of the rivals had the forces and resources needed to resolve the protracted conflict.

The dispute ended in December 1478 with an agreement under which both men enjoyed the title of King of Bohemia, with Vladislav retaining rule inBohemia while Matthias retained control of the neighbouring lands of the Bohemian Crown, that is, Moravia, Silesia and Upper and Lower Lusatia.

As for hobbies, Vladislav Jagiellonian did not have many of them; he loved hunting. He used practically every spare moment for it. "He liked to stay at Křivoklát or to run around in the Prague Royal Game Preserve, known today as Stromovka. The hunting lodge there was his creation," says Jarolímková.

After he was elected King of Hungary in 1490 (after the death of Matthias Corvinus), he moved from Prague to Buda. He returned to Bohemia only three times and briefly. The Hungarians refused to allow him more frequent trips to Bohemia because they wanted to control him. Vladislav died at the age of 60 in 1516, outliving his wife by ten years, although he was seriously ill.
