Approximately forty thousand years old necklace discovered by archaeologists in Siberia. Scientists say it was made with tools similar to modern-day drills. It probably belonged to a prehistoric princess.
The bracelet is made of green stone and archaeologists found it next to human remains in a Siberian cave. It's the oldest piece of jewelry found in the world so far. It looks like a modern, nicely polished piece. Archaeologists say it was made of chlorite.
"It was normally found about 240 kilometres away from where we found the jewel. This suggests that the bracelet was really important," the archaeologists believe.
The remarkable bracelet was found in 2008 in the Altai Mountains. This is a broad mountain system in central Asia on the border of Russia, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia. "It was a truly exceptional object in its time and must have been of great significance to its owner. The level of craftsmanship of the jewellery suggests that people in those times were much more advanced than is generally reported," the archaeologists said.
The researchers found that the hole in the bracelet was drilled with such precision that it could only be done with a high-rotation drill similar to those used today. It was also carefully polished and a heavy pendant, probably attached with a short leather strap, had dried out in the middle.
The bracelet was made by the so-called Denisovans, who were members of the genus Homo close to the Neanderthals. Only a few bone fragments of these people have been found, the first in the Denisova Cave in the Altai. "Whoever made the jewel had perfect skills. At first we thought the bracelet was made by Neanderthals or modern humans, but later it turned out to be Denisovans. All the jewellery had great significance for ancient people," said Irina Salnikova from the Museum of History and Culture of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East in Novosibirsk.
Experts say the owner wore it only occasionally. "It is stunning. In bright sunlight it reflects the sun's rays, at night by the fire it casts a deep shade of green. I believe this beautiful and very fragile bracelet was worn only in exceptional moments," said Anatoly Derevyanko, director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Siberian branch of the Russian Academy.
