Four years ago, the Museum of the Highlands in Jihlava acquired a smaller coin hoard. It is not as rare a find as the treasure from Horní Rápotice, but the museum experts were pleased with it. The oldest coins of the depot are the grosz of Charles IV.
The museum did not provide much information about the origin of the treasure. Only that it was located in Osová Bítýška and was found in the summer of 2017. The discovery was presented by Jana Fischerová, deputy governor of the Vysočina Region for culture, monument care and tourism.
"It belongs to important material sources for the study of the composition of currency in Moravia in the fifteenth century. It also contributes significantly to the study of the typology and chronology of the Prague groschen of Wenceslas IV," she informed the deputy governors.
The honest finder received a reward for handing over the treasure, but the region did not comment on the amount. The oldest Charles IV grosz are represented by three pieces in the depot. All coins from the hoard are otherwise made of silver. They were examined by the Assay Office, which found that the find contained up to 95 percent silver.
The coins are otherwise preserved in very good condition. There's only a slight indication that they were in circulation. But they probably haven't been in circulation for some time.
The Museum of the Highlands in Jihlava boasts several beautiful finds. For example, the aforementioned find from Horní Rápotice is worth mentioning. A man found over three hundred gold and silver coins there. We wrote about the treasure here: Treasure of half a million
Another treasure from 2017, found in Nová Ves near Chotěbor, which also ended up in the museum's collection. The couple discovered 776 silver coins from the fourteenth to sixteenth century during the reconstruction of their family house. They received a reward of CZK 47,000 from the region. This is CZK 34,580 more than what the treasure discoverers would have been entitled to under the law. The county wanted to reward the finders for their excellent attitude when they announced the discovery of the treasure.
Most of the hoard consisted of Prague grosz and half grosz. However, foreign currency is also represented in the form of kreuzers from the Vienna mint or coins from Zurich or Nordheim, Germany.
