Adam Day has only been searching with a metal detector for three years and has already found a gold ring in a field. Probably belonged to the bishop. It was auctioned off for thousands of pounds three years ago.

The gold ring, believed to have belonged to a medieval bishop, sold at auction for £7,100. It came just weeks after the jewel was found in a field by a metal detectorist. The history of the ring dates back to between 1450 and 1550.

The ring was discovered by Adam Day, a 30-year-old professional driver from Hull. The jewel was found in a field near Beverley Minster. It was made of 20ct gold and features images of St George, St Catherine and floral designs. The ring was sold at the well-known Hansons auction house in the UK. It was bought by a private buyer, not a museum or institution.

Day was already determined to part with the money. "I'll share with two friends who also search with metal detectors and a farmer in whose field I found the ring. It's land in Beverley Minster. One of the largest churches in the UK is located there," revealed the lucky finder.

He didn't spend much time searching with metal detectors before he found the ring. He admitted that it was only three years and he is happy that he was able to find something so rare so "early". Always trying to be honest, he even organized the farmer in question to see if he could go through his field with a metal detector. And since the man agreed, Day went looking.

The gold ring he found is rare indeed. Multiple antiquities experts agreed. Adam Staples, who ran the auction, joined in. He said only people of high status could afford a gold ring like this. "And that's what bishops or members of the nobility were."

Although the ring went for "only" £7,100, the finder was pleased. In fact, the original estimates had spoken of £8,000 to £10,000.

The jewel has fine decorative engraving and faceting. "I think the ring belonged to the Bishop of Beverley Minster himself. He may have got it when he started working here. So I conclude from the way the jewel is decorated that there are saints on it," concluded Staples.

A very rare ring was also found three years ago by a gardener in the Yizre'el Valley in northern Israel. The jewel depicts St. Nicholas. It probably dates from sometime between the 12th and 15th centuries. We wrote about the ring here: Medieval Ring
