An incredible discovery was made by a Polish builder who was cleaning a swamp in the town of Hrubieszów. He found a 13th-century sword in incredibly good condition.
Archaeologists have described the discovery of the medieval sword as truly extraordinary. About 600 years ago, it was a typical weapon for a knight. The owner is unknown, but there is a mark on the back of the sword. It's probably a blacksmith's mark, which may lead archaeologists to the blacksmith shop that made the weapon.
One theory is that the sword belonged to an unfortunate medieval knight who may have fallen or lost his sword in a peat-filled bog 600 years ago. The weapon is incredibly well preserved except for the hilt and is thought to date from the late thirteenth or mid-fourteenth century.
A builder was surprised to discover the sword while draining a peat bog in the Polish town of Hrubieszów. The weapon is 1.2 metres long and weighs about 1.3 kilograms. It was donated to the local Stanislaw Staszic Museum. "This is a truly unique find for our region," said the museum's director, Bartłomiej Bartecki.
Experts sent the sword to Warsaw in the hope of finding out more information about the weapon. It was then returned to Hrubieszów. While the location of the swamp was kept secret to prevent looting, archaeologists planned to return there to see if there were any other artifacts or even bones.
A sword in the reconstructed castle in Breclav
Our archaeologists also recently managed to find a rare sword. They found a medieval weapon from the eleventh century in a reconstructed castle in Breclav. "This is a very rare sword, the fifth in the Czech Republic," said archaeologist Miroslav Dejmal.
According to experts, it could have been used during a ritual burial. Archaeologists have also found the remains of eleventh-century walls at the Breclav castle, as well as three skeletons that were embedded in the foundation of the walls. Interesting is a piece of a vessel with the LWZ monogram. This means Ladislav Velen of Žerotín, who was the owner of the estate.
On the site of the Breclav castle there used to be a castle that would be a thousand years old. Archaeologists are trying to gather as much information about its history as possible during their research. However, their work is complicated by the fact that there was a fire there in the past.
