Petr Navařík found fragments of Renaissance tiles when he dug a sewer connection in Dobrčice in the Přerov region. Archaeologists have succeeded in composing two complete specimens.
According to the finder, the Renaissance tiles were stored together with a large number of fragments of early modern kitchen ceramics in a waste pit, which he encountered while digging a sewer connection in an extension adjacent to the west wall of the farm passage.
Archaeologists have managed to assemble two complete tiles. The first is the motif of an amphora-shaped vase, in which a floral decoration is placed. "This medieval scene is housed in a circular medallion. The model for this motif could have been an attempt to depict a flower arrangement popular in the interiors of Renaissance houses, "said archaeologists Zdeněk Schenk and Jan Mikulík.
The square tile is complemented in the corners by winged heads of angels. At the bottom right, it has a splash of green glaze, probably because the tile was placed on the stove in less visible places, so as not to disturb the overall aesthetic impression. Tiles with a similar motif have been acquired in the Přerov region in recent years in Osecká Street in Lipník nad Bečvou and on Horní náměstí in Přerov.
The second tile, which archaeologists managed to fold, has the motif of an imperial double-headed eagle. "But it is not very clear, which is probably due to the state of the hull or the negative form (matrix) into which the potter pressed the tiles. Again, these are square format tiles. The collection includes torsos of other front heating walls, which also bear relief decoration, "said archaeologists.
According to them, the found Renaissance stoves were part of the stove, which in the second half of the sixteenth century heated the room of a brick building in Dobrčice, the owner of which could afford to buy such a radiator.
"Today we can only assume whether the stove really stood on the site of the farm in question or was originally located on the former Dobrčice fortress. As for the fragments of kitchen ceramics, the vast majority of them correspond to the common pottery production of the early modern period, "said Schenk and Jan Mikulík.
