In the autumn of 1938, an anti-Czech uprising broke out in the border region, initiated by the Henlein family and consisting of a series of demonstrations and provocations. The riots were sparked by Hitler's radio speech on the evening of 12 September.

The siege of Leningrad began in early September 1941. It lasted a full 900 days. The suffering of the local population was immeasurable. People died of hunger, cold, disease, bombing and sniping.

When Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, the French government declared a general mobilisation in accordance with the Allied agreement and prepared for war. The borders with Germany were closed and the evacuation of the civilian population from the border areas began.

The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, with Banská Bystrica as its centre. The aim was to liberate Slovakia in cooperation with the advancing Red Army and to restore the existence of Czechoslovakia.

25.8. 1944 Destructive bombing of Brno

Brno was bombed at the end of World War II. The industrial city became the target of Allied air raids. The first one came on August 25, 1944, killing 200 people.

24.8. 1943 Battle of the Dnieper

The Battle of the Dnieper was a gigantic battle of the Great Patriotic War, which took place from 24 August 1943. The Soviet army formed five fronts that operated along the river in an area approximately 1,400 kilometers wide.

The occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops was the biggest shock to our country since the end of the Second World War. The invasion claimed the lives of 72 of our citizens.

13.8. 1945 Return of RAF pilots

54 Spitfires of the Czechoslovak Fighter Wing landed at Ruzyně Airport in August 1945. They returned from their service in Great Britain. They were welcomed by thousands of people, not only from the capital.
