Northern Germany's oldest shoe discovered

Archaeologists from the Lower Saxony State Heritage Office (NLD) in cooperation with the mining company Vechta found a well-preserved leather shoe. Together with various parts of the wagon, it had been hanging in the peat bog right next to an old plank path for more than 2,000 years.

13. 6. 2011 The oldest battle site from the Bronze Age

Ten years ago, archaeologists discovered a hundred skeletons in the Tollense valley in northern Germany, suggesting a brutal battle between warring tribes. The pierced skulls and broken bones apparently lay on the oldest battlefield ever found. It dates back to the Bronze Age.

The Colosseum will offer a view like the gladiators

For over five hundred years, the Roman Colosseum was the largest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire. It was the site of gladiatorial duels, wild animal fights and executions. But then, for centuries, it fell into disrepair. Now, almost two thousand years later, this cultural monument is getting a new floor. It will actually be a replica of the original. It should be finished by the end of 2023.

8. 6. 2010 The remains of a Saxon princess identified

The skeleton was discovered by archaeologists in the Magdeburg Cathedral in eastern Germany. They later discovered that it belonged to the Saxon princess Eadgyth, granddaughter of Charlemagne and queen of the Holy Roman Empire.

The forty thousand year old flute was discovered twelve years ago by archaeologists in the Hohle Fels cave near Schelklingen in southern Germany. It's made of bird bones. Experts say it's proof that music accompanied humans much earlier than they thought.

One of the victims of the eruption of Vesuvius 2000 years ago was a rescuer - it didn't take much to save him

Italian archaeologists have identified the body of a man killed in the eruption of Vesuvius. The remains of what was once thought to be a private soldier were discovered in Herculaneum along with three hundred others in the 1980s. Experts now believe he was a senior officer in the rescue mission led by Pliny the Elder.

Two telescopes made of bones were discovered nine years ago in Amsterdam during the reconstruction of toilets. They date from the eighteenth century and the longer of the two measures about fourteen centimetres.
